About Carlisle

Carlisle is known for being a large transportation and logistics hub, especially because of its proximity to Interstates 81, 83, 76, and 15. The area is the midway point of the Appalachian Trail, and located within a day’s drive of several major cities, including Baltimore, Washington DC, Philadelphia, New York City and Pittsburgh.

The historic area was prominent in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. George Washington attended church here, Molly Pitcher is buried here, troops formed here to put down the Whiskey Rebellion, and the courthouse bears the marks of cannon fire from the Confederate march to nearby Gettysburg. In addition to military history, a great deal of famous athlete Jim Thorpe’s personal story took place at the American Indian Industrial School, which was located in Carlisle.

The area houses several prestigious institutions of higher learning, including the United States Army War College, Penn State University’s Dickenson School of Law, Dickenson College, and even the Central Pennsylvania Youth Ballet. Carlisle’s downtown area contains wonderful shops, stores and restaurants, all within walking distance of each other. Historic properties found in the borough include townhomes in the downtown area and Craftsman-style homes in Old Mooreland.

There are plenty of things to do in Carlisle and entertainment for all ages. Some delicious local restaurants include Hamilton Restaurant and Lounge, Allenberry Resort and Playhouse, and Boiling Springs Tavern. Fly fishing is an especially popular pastime, and Carlisle is home to some internationally renowned fly fishing locations. Tourists flood the area to tour historic sites, such as the U.S. Army Heritage and Education Center, see some of the largest car shows in the East, and visit several state parks. Residents frequent several local orchards and farmer’s markets, benefiting from the local produce available in Carlisle. Shopping is a wonderful pastime for residents and guests alike, with Pomfret Street being one of the more popular areas to spend the day. On Saturday afternoons, the street features live music for shoppers to enjoy.
